Ligature Poetics

Project: Ligature Poetics

A ligature is two or more letters combined that form a single glyph in typography. For this project I had to visually create a phrase using five ligatures that related to my thesis topic on Transculturalism and Design. Transculturalism is characterised by cultural fluidity and the dynamics of cultural change; whether by conflict, necessity, revolution or the slow progress of interaction, different groups share their stories, symbols, values, meanings and experiences. In my thesis I explore how this philosophy could be used as a tool to expand our visual language and promote diversity in graphic design. The phrase 'the effects of culture can be defined by the reflections of the past reschuffled by today's affinities' directly relates to my thesis and uses all five ligatures.
